Welcome to my anime/manga section. Here I have reviewed/summerised some japanese shows I have seen lately.
Like any review these are my opinion so please don't just take my word for it. There is the shoutbox if you wish to place a comment or suggest another anime I can place on the page.
Chobits: Young farm boy, Hideki dreams of going to university in Tokyo, but must go to prep-school first. When he arrives in Tokyo Hideki finds that everyone owns "Persocoms" computers that look exactly like people. Hideki cannot afford a persocom but by a stroke of luck, finds one in the trash. But this persocom is different, she doesn't have an operating system, yet she functions normally. Also, why was she dumped in the garbage? (when I saw the DVD cover I thought This would be proper girly. I was wrong, It's funny as hell).
Akira: What can I say this is the ultimate in japanimation! I'm a bit bias as it is my favourite film ever! The story revolves around a young boy named tetsuo who begins to develop strong psycic powers after an encounter with another powerful psycic. Tetsuo's powers rage out of control as he searches for the boy named Akira who is known to share the same powers as himself. It's down to Tetsuo's best friend Kaneda to stop Tetsuo one way or another.
.hack//DUSK: Shugo and his twin sister Rena, two new players in The World, (a future online roleplaying game) are caught up in an unknown agenda. Unstopable monsters have started appearing and players that encounter these monsters fall into comas in the real world. Playing the limited edition characters, Kite and Black Rose, and the wielding the mysterious twilight bracelet, the two siblings must figure out what is going on and stop it before the damage escalates.
.hack//SIGN: The world, an online RPG game owned by 20 million people worldwide. A young wavemaster named Tsukasa wakes up in the world, able to feel, taste, smell things around him. But it's just a game right? Tsukasa finds that he cannot log out of the game. Why? He can't remember who he is outside the game. Why? Helped by his friends Subaru, Mimiru, Bear and many others, Tsukasa must solve the mystery of the Key of the Twilight and the shining girl Aura. Why wont she wake up and why can't he log out?
Quite a good one. Takes a while to get going but is great all the same.
Lunar Legend Tsukihime: I like this one! As a young boy, Shiki Tohno is involved in an accident which leaves him with an unusual ability. He has the "mystic eyes of depth perception" which means he can see red lines everywhere on everything and everyone. When he breaks the lines by slicing them with his pen-knife, the object in question breaks too, destroying it. One day a stranger gives Shiki a pair of glasses that nullifies his power allowing him to live normally. Many years on, Shiki has a violent encounter with a vampire princess named Acrueid who then asks him to help her hunt and the detroy vampires trying to kill her as she is an outcast.
Gungrave: Brandon Heat is raised from the dead to become the man known as "Beyond the Grave". He has been summoned to help destroy the Syndicate which has destroyed his home town and his one true love Maria. He also has some revenge issues with his old friend Harry MacDowell head of the Syndicate and his murderer.
Samurai Champloo: A chance encounter brings together three unlikely friends:
Mugen- A roaming vagabond in search the ultimate opponent.
Jin- An outcast Samurai, wise and strong, trying to forget the the past.
Fuu-Chan- A young girl in search of the Samurai who smells like sunflowers. She "hires" Jin and Mugen to help her on her quest.
This is a strange blend of Action, Comedy and Hip Hop music.
Yes thats right. Hip Hop....
This is great! Action and comedy from the word go.
Full Metal Alchemist: This is the story of two young Alchemists, the Elric brothers. After the death of their mother the brothers try and use alchemy to bring her back but they forget the principal of equivilent exchange (Somthing can be made but at the cost of another)((I Think)). Anyhow, young Alphonse loses his body and Edward loses his leg as the cost. Edward manages to tie Al's soul to a suit of armour but at the cost of an arm. Ed gets his missing limbs replaced with machinery. Now the brothers are in search of the Philosopher's stone which will give them the power to restore what they have lost.
Paranoia Agent: In this series two detectives try to solve the mystery of Lil'Slugger, a vicious attaker who strikes, seemingly random people. This leads to many questions like: Why does he do this? What reason does he have? When will he strike again? Where will he strike next? And most importantly, Who is Lil'Slugger?
Idol of Darkness: THIS FILM SHOULD NEVER BE SEEN BY HUMAN EYES! I bought this thinking it would be an ultra-violence film like Ninja Scroll, being an 18 cert and all. I WAS WRONG! This film is what's known as HENTAI or simply ANIMEPORN. Idol of Darkness is only half an hour long and features SEX SEX and more SEX based around a crap story.
I'm not one for censorship but c'mon seriously!
Serial Experiments, Lain: One word, WIERD. A schoolgirl comits suicide then a week later starts sendind e-mails to people. One of those people is Lain a thirteen year old girl who begins to see the truth...
This left me with one thought: What the F***!? I just can't get my head around this one. So confusing, and at times is almost a silent picture
Haibane-Renmei: Light hearted and peaceful series about a group of angelic creatures known as the Haibane. A new Haibane named Rakka awakens in a town where the Haibane co-exist with humans. The town is surrounded by huge walls. No-one enters and no-one leaves. Everyone is happy like this but not Rakka she longs to know what is beyond the walls of the town. Plus she has unanswered questions like: Who am I? Who was I? Where am I? and Why am I here?
Trigun: Vash the stampede, the $$60,000,000,000 man, ($$ means double dollars) the humanoid typhoon. Dangerous names for a not-so dangerous guy. Vash is a legend for the wrong reasons, the greatest gunman ever known is really a clumsy fool who acts tough now and then. Wanted for destroying contless towns and cities, Vash is an outlaw constantly chased by bounty hunters. Strangely enough no-one from the towns he destroyed has ever died. Hmnn...
This is a Sci-Fi/Western which is packed full of action and comedy. I can't say that I'm a fan though. It's a really great show but I just cant get into it.
R.O.D the TV: Three sisters, are hired to guard a famous author. The three sisters are all "papermasters" which means the can make anything from paper. eg: Giant dragons, swords, shields, even clothes.
Ghost in the Shell: Set in the future where many humans have traded thier bodies in for cyborg bodies. This is the story of a group of cyborg "cops" led by Major Moktoko Kusinagi as they track down a notorious hacker called the puppetmaster. This is very "matrixy" with action from start to finish. I had to watch this film twice to fully understand what was going on.(mainly at the end) Great film though.
Adventures of Mini-Goddess: Is there really any need to explain this anime? Look at the picture, are you really going to watch this tripe? C'mon get serious!
I'm not a religious man but if you buy/watch this you're gonna go to hell...
Ninja Scroll: A story about a wandering ninja (though he looks like a samurai) named Jubei. On his travels he comes across a ninja girl named Kegero being raped by a monster. He saves her and they go thier seperate ways. Jubei meets an old man named Dakuwan who tricks him into working for him by poisoning Jubei. Only Dakuwan knows the antidote and will give it to Jubei providing he completes his task. Along with Kegero they fight to stop a massive smuggling operation led by the 8 devils of Kimon, a group of demons led by Jubeis's arch-nemesis, Himaro Gemma a man who should be dead...
Wolf's Rain: This is going to make me unpopular with some people I know but it can't be helped this show is camel turd.
It's a nice concept though. Set in the post-apocalyptic future wolves disguise themselves as humans and live among us. Four wolves set out on a journey to find Paradise. There you go, CAMEL TURD.
Ninja Scroll TV: This show follows the adventures of Jubei and Dakuwan as they strive protect the Light Maiden and the sacred artifact known as the Dragon Stone which only she can use. The Maiden and the Stone are also sought after by two feuding demon-ninja clans, the Hiruko clan and the Kimon clan. (ring a bell?) Each clan will stop at nothing to get what they want and so it's up to Jubei to save the day.
I really like tis show, its's violent, bloody and full of action. (Much like the movie) This is set after the movie and has one let down... It's very repetitive. Each episode The heroes are attacked by 2-4 Demons each of which Jubei will kill during the course of the episode.
Bleach: 15 year old, Kurosaki Ichigo has the ability to see ghosts. Not only that, he can speak with them. He encounters a death god named Kuchiki Rukia. Her job as a death god involves sending spirits to heaven and destroying Hollows. (bad spirits) If a spirit is not"sent", they risk the chance of becoming Hollows themselves. During a battle with a Hollow, Rukia is seriously injured, leaving her defenseless. To save herself and Ichigo, she gives Ichigo her powers to defeat the Hollow. He destroys the monster and in doing so, has to take up the duties of the injured death god while she recovers. I am loving this show. It has a bit of a cliche where-in a young boy gains supernatural powers and has to save the world whilst getting through school. That doesn't matter though it's great!
